Richard Anthony Gillihan, Sr., 69, of Webster Springs, formerly of Gardner, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at Webster Memorial Hospital.
Born July 9, 1955 in Gardner, KS, he was the son of the late Hobart Robert and Mary Rose (Loftus) Gillihan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Kenny, Donnie, and Paul Gillihan; sister, Jo Jukes; and his best friend and love of his life, Jody Riddles.
Richard spent many years working for Burlington Northern Santa Fe as a railhand, which is from where he retired. He enjoyed his 1999 Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe. While in Kansas, he was very active in his community organizing poker runs for various families and charitable organizations. He was very stubborn, but loved to chit chat and swap stories with just about anyone. In 2021, Richard moved from Kansas to Webster Springs to be close to his son and grandsons, whom he loved dearly. He wasn’t big on college or professional sports, but enjoyed watching and supporting his son and grandsons compete and succeed in their sports of choice. Even after his passing, Richard, once again, selflessly gave to those in need, as an organ donor.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons: Richard (Sarah) Gillihan of Webster Springs, Chris (April) Richards of Gardner, KS, and Andy (Leslie) Walker of Wellington, KS; daughters: Dorothy Monney (companion, Jeffery) of Jacksonville, NC and Elizabeth (Derek) Suurvarik on Omaha, NE; grandchildren: Isaac Treadway, Trip Gillihan, Sidney Monney, Lilly Monney, Liam, Bodie, and Ava Richards, and Johnathon Miller; sister: Gerry Sue (Gene) Brite of Spring Hill, KS; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
In keeping with Richard’s wishes, the organ donation process has been completed and many people across the nation will benefit from his selfless act. He will be cremated here in WV, and there will be a celebration of life and “Last Ride” at a later date in Gardner, KS.
